Tallow Balm - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why do you avoid synthetic fragrances, petroleum-derived ingredients and unnecessary fillers?
We believe skincare should be purposeful, not complicated.
- SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES: Can contain numerous individual aromatic chemicals, some of which may irritate or sensitise sensitive skin. Certain fragrance ingredients, including some phthalates and synthetic musks, have also raised concerns regarding potential endocrine-disrupting effects.
- PETROLEUM-DERIVED INGREDIENTS: Such as mineral oil and petrolatum are effective occlusives that help reduce moisture loss and protect the skin. However, they don't naturally provide the fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins and other skin-conditioning compounds found in ingredients such as tallow and jojoba.
- UNNECESSARY FILLERS: We don't believe an ingredient needs to be included simply to bulk out a formula, create a particular texture, make a product look and feel a certain way or increase profit margins.
What is tallow skincare?
- Tallow is rendered fat from cattle, traditionally used for generations as a nourishing skin balm.
- Rich in naturally occurring fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, tallow helps nourish, soften and support the skin’s natural barrier.
- Our tallow is then combined with purposeful ingredients such as golden jojoba oil, vanilla bean, lavender, calendula, zinc oxide or essential oils.
Can people with eczema or psoriasis use tallow skincare?
Eczema: A common inflammatory skin condition characterised by dry, itchy and irritated skin.
Psoriasis: A chronic inflammatory skin condition that can cause patches of thickened, scaly skin.
For those navigating concerns such as eczema or psoriasis, ingredient simplicity can become particularly important.
Tallow Nation takes a back-to-basics approach: thoughtfully selected ingredients, nourishing oils and traditional tallow, without unnecessary complexity.
Can I apply makeup and sunscreen over Tallow Balm?
Yes.
- However, how well makeup and sunscreen sit over Tallow Balm will depend on the particular products you use.
- Some may layer beautifully, while others may pill, feel greasy, sit differently on the skin, or not apply as smoothly.
- For best results, apply a small amount of Tallow Balm, allow it to settle into the skin, then apply your sunscreen and makeup as usual.
Why is my tallow balm firm, and should it be whipped?
Our tallow balm is only lightly whipped - not heavily whipped, and that’s intentional.
Whipping can make a balm easier to scoop, but it also incorporates air. More air means less actual product by weight. We’d rather give you more balm than a jar full of fluff!
Because our balm contains no emulsifiers, thickeners, synthetic gelling agents, fillers or texture stabilisers, its consistency naturally changes with the seasons. It will be firmer in winter and softer in summer, that’s simply the nature of a minimal-ingredient, natural balm.
And once it meets warm skin, it melts beautifully and glides on easily. No need for a mountain of air to make that happen.
Do I need a separate day cream, night cream, hand cream and eye cream?
Not necessarily.
- Tallow balm is a rich, concentrated moisturiser that helps nourish, soften and support the skin’s natural barrier. It can be particularly comforting for mature, dry or dry-feeling skin, which may benefit from a richer, more conditioning moisturiser.
- Use it morning or evening, on the face, around the eyes, lips, hands or anywhere your skin needs extra nourishment.
Does your tallow smell like beef?
At Tallow Nation, we begin with carefully selected beef suet - the firm, clean fat found around the kidneys.
We slowly render and purify it multiple times with filtration to create a refined tallow, minimising the natural beef aroma to achieve a clean, neutral scent ideal for skincare.
Why use tallow on the skin?
Tallow is naturally rich in skin-conditioning fatty acids, including oleic, palmitic and stearic acids, with smaller amounts of linoleic acid.
These fatty acids are also found naturally in the skin's protective lipid barrier, which is why tallow has traditionally been valued as a rich, nourishing moisturiser that helps leave skin feeling soft, supple and well-conditioned.
Will Tallow clog my pores?
- Tallow has a rich texture, but whether an ingredient feels pore-clogging depends on the individual and their skin. Beef tallow has a relatively low comedogenic rating and is generally considered unlikely to clog pores when used appropriately.
- When introducing any new skincare product, it can take a little time for your skin to adjust to a change in routine. We recommend introducing tallow gradually and starting with a small amount, particularly if you’re prone to congestion or breakouts.
- Our tallow balm is designed to nourish and support the skin’s natural barrier without leaving it feeling unnecessarily heavy or greasy. As everyone's skin is different, give your skin time to adjust and pay attention to how it responds.
Are all tallow balms the same?
Not all tallow balms are created equal.
The quality and character of a tallow balm can vary depending on:
- Source of the tallow
- How the cattle are raised and fed
- Which part of the fat is used
- How it is rendered and purified, and
- What other ingredients are added.
Balm, cream, lotion or moisturiser—what's the difference?
Our tallow products are formulated as balms rather than creams or lotions, because they are concentrated, water-free formulations made primarily from fats and oils
The terms can overlap, which is why different brands may use them interchangeably.
So, what’s the difference?
- BALM: An oil- and fat-based formulation with little to no water. Our tallow balm is anhydrous, meaning it contains no added water. It is rich and concentrated, and melts into the skin with body warmth.
- CREAM: Usually a mixture of water and oils or fats held together by an emulsifier. Creams tend to have a lighter, creamier texture.
- LOTION: Generally a thinner, more fluid emulsion containing a higher proportion of water, making it easier to spread over larger areas.
- MOISTURISER: A broad term for a product designed to moisturise and condition the skin. A moisturiser can be a balm, cream, lotion, oil or other formulation.
Why do you use jojoba oil in your balm?
Golden jojoba oil is a natural complement to tallow:
- Skin-conditioning: Helps soften and smooth the skin while supporting its natural barrier.
- Rich in antioxidants: Naturally contains vitamin E and other antioxidant compounds.
- Lightweight & silky: Helps balance the richness of tallow, allowing the balm to glide smoothly over the skin.
- Highly stable: Jojoba is technically a liquid wax ester, which gives it excellent resistance to oxidation.
- Gentle & well tolerated: Often used in formulations for dry or sensitive-feeling skin.
Is your tallow balm suitable for children and babies?
- Our vanilla bean and calendula tallow balms contain no essential oils or synthetic fragrances. Both are made by gently infusing the botanical ingredient into jojoba oil then carefully straining it. The Vanilla Balm is infused with vanilla bean, while the calendula balm is infused with calendula flowers.
- As children's skin can be particularly sensitive, we recommend patch testing first and using a small amount.
- For newborns and very young babies, particularly those with sensitive or compromised skin, consult your healthcare professional before introducing a new leave-on skincare product.
- For older children, our balms can be used sparingly to nourish and condition dry-feeling skin.
Is your tallow balm greasy?
Tallow balm is rich by nature, so a little goes a long way.
Our balm contains no water, emulsifiers, thickeners, fillers or texture stabilisers to bulk out or alter its consistency.
Applied sparingly to warm, slightly damp skin, it melts beautifully into the skin, leaving it feeling nourished rather than coated.
Why does my balm feel different in winter and summer?
- Because our balm is made without water, emulsifiers or synthetic texture modifiers, its consistency naturally changes with temperature.
- In cooler weather, it becomes firmer; in warmer weather, it becomes softer.
- Once warmed between your fingertips and applied to warm skin, the balm melts readily, glides smoothly and absorbs beautifully.
Why choose tallow over a conventional moisturiser?
- Many conventional moisturisers contain water, emulsifiers, thickeners, preservatives, fragrances, fillers and numerous supporting ingredients to create their desired texture and shelf life.
- Our approach is different: fewer ingredients, chosen with purpose.
Are your products chemical and toxin-free?
- We don't make broad “chemical-free” or “toxin-free” claims.
- Everything is made of chemicals, including natural ingredients, and toxicity depends on the substance, concentration and exposure.
- What we can say is that we deliberately formulate without synthetic fragrances, petroleum-derived ingredients and unnecessary fillers, using a small number of carefully selected, purposeful ingredients.
